A new breaktrhrough in hearing technology is now available at Community Hospital in Oklahoma City.
It’s called Esteem, the world’s first fully implantable hearing device. Community Hospital ENT Physician and Neurotologist, Dr. Wayne E. Berryhill, is one of a handfull of physicians in the United States qualified to use Esteem® as a treatment for hearing loss.
Unlike cochlear implants or hearing aids, Esteem uses the patient’s own eardrum as a microphone. By using the patient’s own eardrum, background noise is naturally reduced, making noisy environments more comfortable and manageable for the patient. There are no external wires or boxes with Esteem. Once the device is in place, no one can see it. Powering the unit on and off and volume adjustments are made via a personal programmer–similar to a small remote control.
Esteem’s internal battery is deisgned to last between 4.5 to 9 years, depending on use. When the battery is ready for replacement, a simple outpatient procedure is all that’s needed to keep the unit functioning for years to come–there is no regular maintenance required.
